The Noom diet is a modern approach to dieting that uses a phone app to connect you to a supportive network to aid weight loss. And from personal accounts, like this one, the Noom diet works. But more importantly, it's community-based approach may not only help you lose weight but keep it off, too, according to experts.

It's no secret that fad diet plans tend to backfire. Establishing new healthy habits is what leads to lasting change and well-being for life. Enter Noom, the weight-loss app and personalized meal-planning service with  million users that became one of the most Googled diets. While it's definitely trendy, Noom is all about making long-term changes to achieve weight-loss goals.
But is it worth it? Like any other diet plan, Noom still has its pros and cons. Here's what you should know before you download it.

Research behind the Noom diet

Noom app tries to change users' behavior over the long term. Because Noom is relatively new, there aren't many studies evaluating how effective it is. A 2016 study published in Scientific Reports, however, found that about 78% of the 35,921 participants who used Noom lost weight over an 18-month period. Noom appeared to help people lose weight over a 6 month period and that getting feedback from their support group encouraged people to log their food more often in the app.

Like other diet programs,  Noom isn't free. When you sign up, you have numerous payment options starting with an annual membership or a monthly plan.  What sets Noom apart from other weight-loss apps is its access to the support group.


Noom health and fitness program is not a typical diet program. The Noom program is an app that was designed by behavioral psychologists that aims to help people lose weight for good. How do they do this? By providing content and guidance that helps people develop healthier habits. Unlike most programs that target weight loss, it doesn’t require you to eliminate any foods or food groups.

The app asks a series of questions about your lifestyle and goals, and uses this information to generate customized content and guidance. But the noom app doesn’t just provide information about food choices. The app provides information about healthy habits and offers quizzes as well, which is designed as an education piece for those using the program. It is easier to make and sustain healthy lifestyle changes if those are based on knowledge. By making this knowledge accessible and fun, the noom program is addressing another aspect of weight loss that other health and fitness programs have not yet done.

Noom does create a calorie budget that is based on the information you give in your profile. You then manually enter in the food you eat, which is subtracted from your daily calorie target. The app will sync with your phone’s Health app to log your physical activity and exercise. Noom app has a coaching piece and food education aspect that’s been compared to the points system of Weight Watchers. In the Noom Diet, foods are color-coded based on their nutritional density. Although there are no “off-limit” foods, the app tells you whether a food is Green, Yellow or Red.

Noom reframes your views on a healthy lifestyle

What enticed  about Noom, specifically, was that the program relies on the necessary ingredients for weight loss, looking at what you eat and how much you move, while also tying in a psychological component and daily accountability.

Once you sign up for the program and pay, the app asks for a bit of personal information, as well as a weight goal and a few other personal goals. You’ll then be connected with a weight loss coach and begin an educational journey that covers everything from mindful eating to identifying goal-disrupting triggers.
Each day has about 5 to 10 minutes of reading and quizzes, with the goal of reconfiguring the way you think about food and exercise. You’ll also interact with a health coach along the way. Though initial interactions do seem generated and by-the-book, it gets more personalized as you get deeper into the program.

You’re also prompted to weigh yourself daily, log your food intake, and input any exercise you complete outside of walking. Steps are logged for you via a smartphone or step tracker and are factored in accordingly.
Ultimately, the goal of Noom is to help you reframe the way you think about food, exercise, and weight management in a way that translates to lifelong change versus a fad diet.

The Noom diet is safe for anyone to try. Noom provides a minimum number of calories per day, encouraging people not to restrict food in an unsafe or unhealthy way.
It uses evidence-based behavior changes and smart coaches to help people set and achieve their weight goals.
